Fatty Acid Methyl Esters

Quantitative analysis of fat composition is extremely challenging. First of all it is necessary to apply highly toxic chemicals and large solvent volumes. As a result, the procedure is very tedious and virtually impossible to carry out in a non-laboratory environment.

We have developed a dedicated platform that is able to deal with the entire preparation procedure from fat to fatty acid methyl ester. The system uses the procedures described in AOCS Ce 2-66, which is based on triglyceride hydrolysis and reaction with BF3. After methylation, FAMEs are extracted in-vial with heptane and washed with NaCl/water. Some typical results are depicted in Table 1.
